Wichita Lineman (Trombone Quartet)

Wichita Lineman, a classic by Jimmy Webb.  Played some Jimmy Webb tunes in a big band recently and was reminded of how nice this one sounded when the Maniacal 4 played it 10-11 years ago.  So, I decided to give it a try.

Inspired by the Marcel's Doo-wop 50's version of the classic Blue Moon by Lorenz Hart and Richard Rogers (1934).  This trombone quartet is transcribed from a vocal arrangement by Aaron Dale.

Trombonolgy

Written in 1947, this quartet by Alan Baylock is from 1998. I edited the arrangement by filling in some sections and adding some melody to the 3rd bone part. The arrangement has sheet music for a full rhythm section, so to get an idea of what that might sound like, I added a bass and drum track in the background.

Bailamos

Written by Paul Barry and Mike Taylor, this was a pop hit for Enrique Iglesias in 1999.  I found this at Musescore.com a number of years ago as a brass quintet.  I revisited the tune a couple of months ago and adapted it for trombone quintet.

This classic Jazz/big band/cabaret tune was written by Bart Howard in 1954.  Frank Sinatra and many others have recorded different versions over the years. I think this is an excellent trombone quintet version.

Blue a slow New Orleans Jazz style brass piece written by Thomas Gansch for Mnozil Brass.  I found this arrangement for 2 trumpets and 4 trombones at Musescore.com.. I adapted it for a trombone quintet.

One of the most recognizable tunes of all time, Over The Rainbow was written by Harold Arlen in 1939. This arrangement is by IowaBob (Bob Driggs), originally for brass quintet. I adapted it a bit for 5 trombones.

This Magic Moment

This Magic Moment was written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, recorded by Ben E. King and the Drifters in late 1959 and later by Jay and the Americans (1968). A young trombone friend who likes old rock tunes asked if I could come up with a version for a "medium to advanced group of  High School bone players".

Little Girl Blue

A classic ballad  that has been recorded by Sinatra, Janis Joplin, Linda Ronstadt, the Carpenters, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Diana Ross, Carly Simon, Nancy Wilson..... I came across this trombone quintet version when reading through a number of charts forwarded to me from a retired trombone player's library.

A Jazz standard written by Frank Perkins in 1934. The title refers to a famous meteor shower over Alabama in 1833. This trombone quintet arrangement, with its close harmonies, gives this chart a popular 1930's-50's sound.  No arranger's name was given on the original chart.
